Base Camp Beta podcast
Base Camp Beta is a podcast for People Who Love Music But Hate The Music Industry. Is that you? If you've found this page, that might be you.
Music culture is in a pretty rough spot in the 21st century. There is a dearth of spaces for critical discourse about music, and the few remaining outlets court corporate #synergy in a feeble effort to stay afloat. Gentrification, political stagnation, and looming crises both economic and ecological increasingly strain artists and music fans. Base Camp Beta will examine these issues through a leftist lens in an attempt to make sense of the current juncture and — perhaps — suggest a path forward.
But Base Camp Beta is really an excuse to talk to our friends: fellow musicians, DJs, and thinkers who have lots of interesting things to say, and we plan to have guests feature on the show more often than not. Every episode will also feature a discussion about a record — one that we love, one that we're divided on, something old, something new, a guest pick... whatever The Algorithm instructs us to discuss. We also love to talk shit and crack bad jokes, which we hope makes the show entertaining to listen to.
Who are we? People who have experienced the industry from every angle: as obsessed fans, as producers and musicians, as promoters and journalists, and as DJs. We have a lot of ideas about how Big Music™ could be improved for everyone involved - including support for streaming platforms like Spotify™ and Apple™ Music, brand synergy with multinational petroleum firms, cool haircuts, and monthly blood donations to Jeff Bezos in exchange for cloud storage.
